Merab has a natural case for a trilogy. Sean O'Malley still owns history with Yan. Cory Sandhagen remains part of every serious conversation near the top. Umar Nurmagomedov has already challenged for gold, while Song Yadong has accumulated the experience of a veteran despite being only 28. Shanghai is important because it gives one of those last two names a current, high-level win that can travel beyond rankings.
Umar's case is about removing the asterisk
Nurmagomedov's lone professional loss came in his first championship attempt against Dvalishvili. Since then, he has answered with decision wins over Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo. The résumé is already contender quality: Cory Sandhagen, Bautista, Figueiredo, and long stretches of high-level control. What Umar needs now is a win that feels like the start of a fresh run rather than an extension of his first title campaign. Beating a top-ranked opponent in a five-round main event, in the opponent's home country, would do exactly that.
Song can turn longevity into urgency
Song has been on the UFC roster since 2017 and has already headlined five Fight Nights. His résumé includes wins over Henry Cejudo, Marlon Moraes, Ricky Simon, and now Figueiredo. It also contains losses to Yan, Sandhagen, and O'Malley, the names that have separated him from the final step. A victory over Umar would be different from adding another respected veteran. It would be a win over a former title challenger in his athletic prime and over the style many fans view as the division's most difficult test. That is the kind of result that changes the language from longtime contender to viable challenger.
Does the winner automatically get a title shot?
Not automatically. Matchmaking depends on timing, health, the champion's schedule, and what happens in the other major bantamweight fights. Merab's claim does not disappear, and a division this deep always produces another candidate. Still, the UFC itself described Nurmagomedov versus Song as a potential title-challenger elimination bout when the matchup was announced. The winner should leave Shanghai with a defensible claim to either the belt or a final eliminator. A dominant performance would make waiting harder to justify.
